Kings seven and eight were undoubtedly chosen as the haftarah to Parashot Vayakhel and Pekudei because the subject of those sections from Exodus is the assembly and completion of the Mishkan (Tabernacle).

The Appointed Meeting Place
When Moses assembled the congregation of Israel to give them instructions regarding the Tabernacle (Mishkan), as related in Exodus 35, he introduced the subject by reiterating the complete Shabbat rest on the seventh day (verses 1-3). This is not the only place in Scripture where we find a connection between the Shabbat and the Tabernacle or Temple. It is the spiritual dimension in both that links the two.
