False Starts

Surely complacency has been a significant sin plaguing recent generations. The Scriptures command us to leave an inheritance for our children (e.g., Proverbs 13:22). In former generations parents prepared their children for life occupations, often incorporating them into family industries. For example, Yosef trained Yeshua in woodworking (Matthew 13:55, Mark 6:3). Furthermore, we are commanded in the Scriptures to train[1] our children in the way that they should go so that when they are older, they will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6).

Yet, how many of us have floundered through life waiting to “come upon” our true calling and identity?

For Example...

Let me give you an example from my own life: Do you remember school pictures? I’m talking about the little ones that came 35 per sheet, which we cut out and passed to our friends? Well, my wife still has the one I gave her while we were in 11th grade, which proudly states my intentions to marry her and provide for our family by being a trash man. I had found what I thought to be a niche in the trash removal and disposal industry, especially directed toward the building industry. As I recall this memory, I now laugh, thinking of how many times I multiplied 100, 200, even 1,000 by $45.00 per dump…believing that if I could just do a certain amount of hauls, I would accumulate vast wealth.

At the time, I was driving a borrowed, 1983-ton pick-up that I had rigged (by myself) with bed extensions to make the back of the truck deeper, thus holding more trash. It must have been a real sight, seeing me drive down the road smiling from ear to ear thinking about what a millionaire I was going to become, while lumber scraps, nails, screws, and drywall pieces flew off the end of my “beautiful creation.” My “temporary” identity as a trash man came crashing down one day when, on the way to the dump, I was passed by an 18-wheeler with about 30 or 40 trash tubs stacked neatly on its bed ready ...
