Torah Observant-Torah Submissive
"Do not think in your heart… saying, Because of my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to possess this land… " Devarim (Deuteronomy) 9:4
How many people have been hurt in the name of religion? How many have been turned away from the truth and the wonderful blessings that Abba has for us in His Torah because it has been propagated in an abusive and immature way?
For many years I was guilty of the above charges. Many believers, particularly my family and close friends, fell under my magnifying glass of Torah correctness and thus were turned away from the very message that I was attempting to share.
If we are convinced of adhering to a Torah-defined lifestyle, the time has come to adjust our approach in teaching and sharing these blessings with others. We often use the words "Torah Observant" to describe ourselves to others in the Faith. Often this is done with a certain degree of pride. I have become increasingly aware of the error of this manner of sharing our Faith, and would like to recommend a different approach. In the end, it may not only define our own lives and goals more accurately, but in the process, it may also impart the truths and joys of living a Torah lifestyle in a more gracious and loving way.
Describing ourselves as "Torah Submissive" when defining our choice of lifestyle and personal application of the Word of God has obvious advantages.
- In our flesh we are captives, kept from being completely "Torah Observant." Yet we know that in Messiah, we have and can possess the righteousness that is of God by faith, and stand complete—fully Torah observant before Him. Thus, in our flesh, when we fall short of Torah standards, yet proclaim ourselves as "Torah Observant," we can easily be labeled as hypocrites by others.
