Close Call

Jennifer seemed to be an answer to prayer. I met her last spring at a church Passover seder-ish event. Eager to share her story with a kindred spirit (me), she wept and explained how lonely she felt, stranded between Christianity and Judaism. She really thought that she was the only person to both believe in Jesus as Messiah and believe that the Torah was for her. She had never heard...

Coming up for Air

Since Holy Cow! was released nearly 4 years ago, I've been busy. I had my first baby 2½ years ago, and my second one a few weeks ago. Ok, I didn't really have another baby. Rather, I was part of a team that gave birth to another book. After over 6 years of gestation, our bouncing-baby-cookbook finally came out: the What the Bible Says about Healthy Living Cookbook.

Gentiles and Torah

Tags:  Boundary Stones, commandments, four prohibitions, Gentiles, Israel's mission, Jewish people, knowledge of God, light to the nations, replacement theology, supercessionism

Most Christian theologians dismiss the applicability of the Torah for believers whatsoever. This view, of course, is what the book Boundary Stones aims to confront. However, some Christian and Messianic teachers are comfortable with the idea that Jewish believers in Jesus can or should continue with Torah observance, but for Gentiles, it is either not recommended or entirely forbidden. It is easy for Gentiles to feel a loss of identity...

Of Church & Steak: Biblical Eating & The NYTimes

“Near a prairie dotted with cattle and green with soy beans, barley, corn and oats, two bearded Hasidic men dressed in black pray outside a slaughterhouse here that is managed by an evangelical Christian.” Does the opening paragraph from August 22’s New York Times article catch your attention? It sure caught mine. Here’s a link to the whole article. I’ve been encouraged by the partnership between Dakota Beef and Wise...

Revenge of the Ebionites

That's the headline from a recent book review of FFOZ's Holy Cow! Does God Care about What We Eat? The magazine that ran this book review is Christianity Today's "Books & Culture," which claims "to edify, sharpen, and nurture the evangelical intellectual community by engaging the world in all its complexity from a distinctly Christian perspective." 1 They tell me that there's no such thing as bad publicity. After all,...

Studies on the Epistle of Hebrews

Recent teaching by a prominent Hebrew Roots teacher has brought questions to the authenticity of this critically important epistle. Hebrews is completely pro-Torah and uplifts Messiah, its role within the canon of Scripture is vital as it addresses our faith and the outworking of our faith from a post-temple perspective

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

In the last issue of messiah magazine (Issue 86), we offered some thoughts on the role of Jewish tradition in keeping Torah. Our reason for doing so was that we have observed a growing tendency among believers to utterly distance themselves from Jewish tradition—even to the point of demonizing it. Believers are redefining the commandments of the Torah in complete antithesis to any form of tradition. It's not healthy.

Why is this Haggadah Different?

I have been a part of the Hebrew Roots/Torah/Messianic movement long enough to know that, in most cases, people attend large community seders to learn of the "shadows of the Messiah" in all the various traditional elements of a standard seder. These folks typically leave saying, "How do they (the Jewish People) not see the Messiah in all this?" Yet, most seem to walk away personally un-impacted by this moed.

Head Exploding Moments

Even after many years in serving this ministry, I am continually amazed at how much there is to learn. But I have to admit, working in the Torah all the time, I sometimes take for granted the "wow" response that many of our constituents experience when they read our books, magazines and other materials.
