Purim Home Companion
Tags: Beth Immanuel, Purim, Purim home companion, Purim Schpiel
The glad month of Adar is upon us, and that means Purim fun. The fast of Esther this year falls on Monday March 9. That night, after sunset, Purim begins. Tuesday March 10 is Purim-day. In the synagogue, the scroll (megilah) of the book of Esther is read on Purim Eve, and then again on Purim morning. The reading of the scroll is typically conducted along with a variety of shenanigans. Some congregations conduct a Purim shpiel--a humorous dramatization of the Esther story.
For Purim 5768 (2008), Beth Immanuel Sabbath Fellowship, the Messianic congregation where I serve, performed a parody version of NPR's popular radio show "A Prairie Home Companion." An mp3 version of the production can be enjoyed at our congregational website by clicking on the following link:
A Beth Immanuel Purim Home Companion
In anticipation of the coming festival of Purim, make some popcorn, pull up some chairs, gather the family round the warm glow of the computer monitor, and enjoy Beth Immanuel's "Purim Home Companion." Recorded 3-21-2008.
