Torah Teaching 101: Lesson 1
Tags: outreach, PORTIONS, torahportions.org
Last night we had another successful Torah outreach class to the local community. The class is growing each week. It is a blessing and honor to teach and study through the word of God with other brothers and sisters in the Messiah.
This group is one of several test sites for the new PORTIONS classes that First Fruits hopes to launch next fall. PORTIONS is our effort to take the Torah to the greater body of Messiah educating believers in the role, beauty, and necessity of Torah in the life of God's people. I am so encouraged with the early fruits of this new effort. We have a class full of excited believers wanting to know and open to learning about the Torah.
One of the founding principles of the PORTIONS class is to teach the Torah without condemnation. A long time ago I realized that teaching the Torah with even a hint of condemnation is ineffective. At times it does bring results but not the kind of results that I find beneficial for a sustainable and mature walk. More times than not people that embrace the Torah through condemnation or judgment become disciples that condemn and judge others. That is not healthy.
I know that the awareness of the role of Torah in one's life only comes through the work of the Spirit, opening one's eyes to the beauty of Torah. One of the teaching principles that PORTIONS is built upon is to just present the Torah, let it speak for itself, and allow God's spirit to do the work of drawing and awakening. This approach works. This approach allows for a more mature and balanced embracing of the Torah. As a person comes to understand each particular commandment, he can see the value and make the choice to employ it into his life.
I know that apprehension about the Torah is a result of being unfamiliar with its contents and teachings. That is why First Fruits created an extensive website that simply gives people easy access to the weekly readings of the Torah. On this site, one can get the full text of the Torah portion or have it read aloud. Our goal is to have people read and hear the Torah. We know that if we can just accomplish this, then the seeds of Torah truth will be planted and God can begin to do the work of drawing people to apply it and convicting people of truth. What is lesson 1 of teaching the Torah? Teach the Torah without judging or condemning others. Have high personal standards without condemnation.
We are active in our efforts to make disciples for the Master from all nations. We are reaching out effectively with the message of Torah and Messiah. Visit our site www.TorahPORTIONS.org to see what were doing to give people easy access to the Torah. Also, consider joining hundreds of people that have placed the Torah PORTION application on their Facebook page or wordpress blog.
