HaYesod Field Report #2

Today we had problems. Without going into a bunch of technical details it boiled down to an equipment breakdown. It was a real disappointment. We have spent a lot of time and effort making sure things like this did not happen—so, like yesterday, when things go well, we acknowledge God’s goodness, today when things go wrong, we acknowledge His sovereignty. Everything is a test, in every situation there is an opportunity to learn and grow—I am choosing to learn and grown in this moment. It will all work out—just keep praying for us.

Today we spent about 4 hours in the Capernaum synagogue, a fourth century structure built atop of the 1st century synagogue of the Master. The remains of both buildings are on the site. The remains of the 4th century synagogue demonstrate that it was a monumental building made of ornate limestone. The Master’s “home congregation” was much simpler and made up of a black, basalt stone. We were there doing a teaching on the Master worshiping on Shabbat in participation with the synagogue and the greater people of Israel. Luke 6:14 says that it was his “custom” and we used this as an opportunity within the context of this setting to help the students of the HaYesod program visualize the Master worshiping within this setting. When people see Him within His Jewish culture it changes their readings of the Gospels.

We prayed Minchah in the synagogue of Yeshua.

As dark settled in tonight and we were scouting locations near the Lake Galilee, we decided to pray Maariv in the Erasmus cave overlooking the site of Tabgah. According to Christian tradition, this was the lonely the place the Master used to pray. We lit candles and prayed maariv beneath the light of the full moon.

We did not capture much video we can use today, and we are facing equipment problems tomorrow as well, but I can tell you this, we have encountered Hashem in significant ways. Here is a picture of Jeremy S.doing his best to make this day work!
