Yartzeit of Leon Levison

Leon Levison was born in 1882 in the holy city of Tzfat in the Galilee to Rabbi Nachum Levison.

Leon’s father wanted the best Jewish education for his children so he acquired the educational services of Rabbi Joshua of Acre. While under the tutelage of Rabbi Joshua, Leon wanted to follow in the paths of the ancient rabbis and not only study Torah but also work with his hands. His family granted him permission to become a tailor. Later Levison left tailoring and began work in agriculture.

By the age of his Bar Mitzvah, Levison already showed leadership qualities, especially in the area of making peace between men as well as showing great mercy towards his fellow man.

Wanting to know about the various ideas of other cultures, Levison began studying French as well as English. The only available tutor in English was through the School of the Free Church of Scotland Mission. Along with lessons in English came discussions on the topic of the Messiah. Over the course of his studies, Levison became a follower of Yeshua.

Although his family could not stand to hear the news of their son’s decision, Levison wanted his family to know that being a follower of the Messiah did not mean hatred for the Jewish people. Levison attended synagogue services, made charitable donations, and continued living his life in service of the Jewish people. He helped raise funds from Christian communities to donate to the Jewish people throughout the world. Levison also went on to author several books and receive various honors throughout his lifetime.

Leon Levison left this world on 11 Kislev 5697 (25 November 1936) at the age of 54.

**Information of the life of Leon Levinson was taken primarily from Would I? Would You?, edited by Henry and Marie Einspruch.
