Urim and Tumim Research

Shalom Torah Scholars,

While doing some online research into the Urim and Tumim (see Exodus 28:30) for the all new Torah Club Volume One, Unrolling the Scroll, I came upon a fascinating website which has put to rest some questions which have vexed me for years. I wonder if it is conceivable that the Urim and Tumim might have worked in a similar fashion. What do you think?

I think I remember reading something about this in BAR last year.

Thanks for the reminder.

As long as the High Priest didn't attempt crack open the Urim and the Tumim and drink the blue fluid, I'm pretty sure that he would have been okay. It may be possible that the Urim and Tumim worked like this, but then I picture a group of Levites standing around the holy object shaking it and screaming with joy as the will of the Father was revealed. Thank you for this post. It was a great way to brighten up a Monday.

Shalom,
Wade

OK, you had me there for a minute.

No doubt some "leading biblical scholar" will launch a worldwide search for the original, complete with lurid tales of Knights Templar, messianic mistresses, and a few space aliens thrown in for good conspiratorial balance.

I always found that toy annoying. Does anybody remember "Time Bomb" or "Hot Potato"? Now those were toys. Knocked out one of my sister's teeth with one. It was loose anyway!

I always thought the 8ball worked on some sort of statistical model. Now I know it's true. If the Urim V'Tumim worked like this, I imagine there was a lot of amusement and then confusion going around.

Isn't this the theme of the next Vendyl Jones...I mean Indiana Jones...movie?

Giggle! Of course! Suetonius recorded the use of the icosahedral device, Rambam expounded upon it, and the Temple Institute currently prepackages the ingredients of the mysterious blue fluid and sells them as a set for home compilation! LOL! :D

I wonder if other cultures had anything similiar to the Urim and Tumim at around the same time or before?
