Ur-Tunes

This Shabbat will be Torah portion Lech Lecha (Genesis 12:1–17:27). Here we begin for several weeks to focus on the life of Abraham. Last week we read that Abraham’s journey began in Ur of the Chaldeans:

Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went out together from Ur of the Chaldeans in order to enter the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Haran, and settled there. (Genesis 11:31)

Years ago many archeological digs took place in Ur. Of the objects that were found two music instruments, a lyre and a double pipe, were present. Recently two gentlemen got together and played a duet on recreations of these instruments. You can watch them play (here) . This is a great window into the musical scene at the time of the patriarchs.

Speaking of music..... I am on a quest to accumulate existing and fresh Messianic music with some rhythm (groove, as it were), but mostly with an "anointing" for young people. My daughter is 13 and just saved up for her 1st mp3 player. Therein lies the problem. She accomplished the task of delayed gratification, budgeting and tithing, but the actual reward portion is the issue. With what does she fill her mind and spirit? Christian music filled with nothingness that has little spiritual growth, if any, since she likes the genre of rock? Or Messianic, even some Christian worship music with solid lyrics, but may appear to be "lame" in the rhythm department.

I can think of Joel Chernoff's "Blessed be the Lord God" and "Jew and Gentile" on his Restoration of Israel. There is also the 3 song medley by Paul Wilbur including "Shouts of Joy", "Sing for joy in the Lord" and "Roni Roni" on Integrity's Hosannah CD, "Shalom Jerusalem". Of course there's always Ohel 5758, much of it only in Hebrew but finding Messianic music that makes you want to get out of your chair and move with abandon as David did is not easy to find. Can you help direct me along these lines? Of coursem there's always the thought that I should just write these songs myself. When I get a spare moment or 2 before my next CD recording.....

I did a google search of "Messianic Rock" and after hearing "Shabbat Shalom" done in a dark, head banging, thrashing style reminiscent of White Snake, I bailed out.

By the way, I enjoy the "Sh'ma" sung by a woman recorded at the beginning of your Torah Club CD. Who is this artist and is her music available?

**Toby's Response:** I am not sure who that was. Try callign the FFOZ office and asking them. For some good messianic music try http://www.arbaminimband.com/.

Hi Toby, I heard the Ur music from a BAR link this morning. One of my kitties was laying on my desk at my elbow; upon hearing the music she quickly sat up and was at high alert. I was amazed, I thought she was acting as if she was frightened, she was straining at the sound. Hurriedly, I clicked on the YouTube link to David's harp on the same page and she recovered and laid down again. We've all heard of the instinct that animals may have. I don't usually make such associations, and my kitties are used to all sorts of sounds, but I have to admit, pictures of UR and Abram leaving there came to my mind....

***Toby's Reponse:*** Hmm. Very interesting.
