Our Opponents Say... (Part 2)

No doubt many are familiar with Psalm 2. This Psalm speaks of the nations coming against Hashem and His Anointed. The text continues with Hashem asking the Messiah to request anything, even up to the nations, as an inheritance. Although many of our opponents will say that the psalmist is referring to David as Hashem’s Anointed (a topic of later discussion God willing), the main voice of opposition relates to verse 12.

Our opponents say: Psalm 2:12 says nashku var which is Hebrew for “yearn for purity.” Christians mistranslate the passage as “kiss the Son” because they erroneously translate it using the Aramaic bar for “son.” King David wrote the entire Psalm in Hebrew. Why would he intend for one word to be read in Aramaic?

The defense of the Gospel: Actually, the translation could go either way. However, some of Judaism’s oldest commentators and texts understood the word to be Aramaic. For example, the primary text of Jewish mysticism, the Zohar says “You are the good shepherd; of you it is said, ‘Kiss the Son’. You are great here below, the teacher of Israel, the Lord of the serving angels, the Son of the Most High, the Son of the Holy One, may His name be praised and His Holy Spirit.”

Note: Although the Jewish mystical texts such as the Zohar may be used in some instances to aid study, the use of such texts does not endorse every concept found within them.

As people progress further along in their walk of Torah they are often confronted by the many Jewish objections to Yeshua and the validity of the Apostolic Writings. This column is intended to begin to address these issues and provide believers with adequate answers.
