Fabulous New Discovery in Jerusalem
Two years ago a water system repair in Jerusalem’s City of David area led to the chance discovery of the Herodian-era Pool of Siloam mentioned in the Talmud and in the Gospels. The 2005 FFOZ Israel trip was thrilled to be able to see this pool of Siloam only months after archaeologists had uncovered it.
Digging around that fabulous discovery led to a further discovery, the uncovering of a Herodian-era street, a main thoroughfare of the Jerusalem that Yeshua and the Apostles knew so well. This discovery was so new last year that it had not yet been publicized when the FFOZ tour visited the site. We were completely surprised to see the uncovered street and walk on those great pavers where the Master’s own feet had surely trodden.
Two weeks ago, the discovery that Herodian street led to an amazing find, an underground water channel used for drainage right below the street. This important discovery is especially significant because the drainage tunnel played a dramatic role in Josephus’ description of the destruction of Jerusalem. Josephus wrote about how many of the people trapped inside Jerusalem escaped the Roman conflagration by hiding themselves in the drainage tunnel.
The discovery of this tunnel is a fabulous find which promises lots of interesting artifacts as it is further opened. Here are two links where you can read about the story:
