A Shofar Story

This Wednesday night the holy festival of Rosh Hashanah begins. On this festival we hear the blast of the shofar and we are reminded of Messiah's second coming, an event that will be heralded by the trumpeting fanfare of the great shofar.

I have a good shofar story. A friend of mine named Jose is a Mexican Messianic believer and a shaliach (apostle) for Messiah that God has chosen to use in powerful ways. Jose told me the following story about trying to bring a shofar into Mexico:

I was on the way to the town where my mom lives and my brothers. So I was driving in my car with a lot of stuff for my nieces and nephews and brothers and friends. There is a city in Mexico, maybe ten hours from the border. The police stop you there to check your car, make sure you don't have any guns, and if you got new clothes they charge you taxes. Sometimes they charge you more than you paid for your clothes or for the stuff. So you say, "Just take it."
So one police officer came to me and stopped me and said, "Bring everything out of the car right now." So I said, "OK, I will bring out everything." I had lots of boxes. The last thing I brought out was the shofar. When the police officer saw how long the shofar was, he took two or three steps back and said, "What's that man?"
I said "It's a shofar. It's a horn."
He said, "What's a horn?"
I said, "Jewish churches and messianic congregations use it to worship God. When you blow it, it confuses Satan because Satan thinks it's the sound of the last trumpet."
So he told me, "Blow it for me please."
"Alright sir."
I decided that, as everything was out of the car and I probably was going to lose the gifts I had purchased, God would respond to my broken heart. So I made three sounds. The Shevarim blast means "broken." I made three sounds asking God for help.
Another guy was checking my bags. When I blew the shofar he raised his head, and said, "What is that? Come over here."
I was afraid he would take away my shofar. I went over to him with some fear in my heart. I explained that it was a shofar. He said, "I know the shofar."
"How do you know the shofar?" I asked.
"I'm a Christian," he explained. "I never heard it before. But I can recognize the sound of the Lord's trumpet."
He took me aside, and he made me teach the police officers about Torah for two and half hours in the police station. They all stopped working, and they kept saying, "Keep going. Keep teaching. Keep going."
The Christian guy was telling the other police officers, "This is what I've been telling you! I've been telling you about this. Everything I've been telling you about Jesus Christ, this Yeshua is true. Listen to this man."

I love that story. The adversary is probably more confused than ever after hearing THAT shofar blast. LOL

Great story. How did it end? Did they take your Shofar?

DTL Replies: No, Jose still has his shofar. Hopefully he will be blowing it Thursday morning.

Oh, what a great story!!

I did have a few giggles when reading it. I was expecting for someone to draw their gun when Jose blasted the shofar.

Thanks for sharing.

I loved Jose's story! It did make me laugh but, also curious. Did the police take his gifts? I read your reply that they did not take his shofar! Praise Yehsua!
I hope they didn't take his gifts!

That was an incredible story. I'm a "Mexican" but from southern Cal, and I love to hear how my people are being touched! What a testimony. The fields are ripe- keep it up Jose!
Thanks,
