Sparing a Maysit

About a month ago I signed up to receive a daily study on the 613 commandments from a well-known Orthodox Jewish Group. Each day I get an e-mail with a few of the 613 commandments explained in detail. Today the theme was on a maysit. A maysit is one who seduces the children of Israel into idolatry. Here’s a few of the mitzvot from today:

1. Negative Mitzvah 17: You shall not be attracted to a "Maysit" (Deuteronomy 13:9)

2. Negative Mitzvah 18: You shall not listen to a "Maysit," nor soften your hatred of him (Deuteronomy 13:9)
3. Negative Mitzvah 19: You shall not pity a "Maysit" (Deuteronomy 13:9)
4. Negative Mitzvah 20: You shall not try to spare a "Maysit" (Deuteronomy 13:9)
5. Negative Mitzvah 21: You shall not conceal evidence that is harmful to the "Maysit” (Deuteronomy 13:9)

The attitude that is taken toward a maysit may seem harsh but at the same time it is necessary so that idolatry does not spread within Israel. If a maysit is tolerated than his wicked influence will prevail.

This got me thinking about the Master. When reading about what some religious Jews think of Yeshua and even hearing them talk I am often times deeply grieved. They have little respect for him and often speak harshly of Messiahship. I often ask myself “Why?” because hearing these things hurts.

I believe the idea of the maysit in the Torah can help us understand this. You see, they consider Yeshua a maysit. He is seen by many religious Jews as one who lead Israel astray and started a false religion. To them when they speak despairingly of him, they are aiding HaShem in wiping out idolatry.

Although you and I know this is not true, this is what has been shown to them for two thousand years. Perhaps we would do well to take a step back and ask ourselves what their perspective is. We certainly will not agree with it but it can help us begin to build bridges. We must show them differently and this will take time, patience, and love.

It is under "Kid's Study" Daily Mitzvah (Maimonides).

Currently, it seems that Messianics are viewed (by Jews)worse than traditional Christians. They see the blurring of the lines of Judaism and Christianity as a deception to entrap unsuspecting Jews into faith in Yeshua. Jews4Jesus is hated almost to the degree of terrorists. They do not differentiate between the various messianic groups.

To change this we will need to approach them with great humility, transparency and a desire to learn from them. It may be helpful for the leadership of FFOZ to meet with folks from Jews4Judaism, Tovia Singer and Yad L'Achim. I know of a christian org that has done this successfully and received a "kosher" cert. from Yad L'Achim. At this time all Messianic groups are targets for the very aggressive anti-missionary movement. BTW, the anti-missionaries are working on the offense not defense.

Thanks for posting this. It is a topic dear to my heart and being mistaken for a Maysit requires alot of grace.

blessings,
Kristee

This particular conversation has touched something that is near and dear to my heart, and something for which I've experienced some trouble for telling Jewish people about Messiah Yeshua.

Though I certainly agree that we must relate to the Jewish people in sincerity, transparency and humility, we also need to remember that Messiah Yeshua did clearly warn us that if the world hated Him, it will most asuredly hate us (John 15: 18-26). Yeshua also said that if anyone confesses Him before men, He will confess them before His Father and if they deny Him before men, He will also deny them before the Father (Matthew 10: 32-33). I'm concerned that, for the sake of peace, many believers are compromising on the command to make talmidim of ALL nations and perhaps promising their Jewish brothers and sisters that they won't speak of Yeshua as Messiah. Short of a miracle, this is the only way that a Christian organization would be considered "kosher." If there is only one way of salvation, then we ara obligated to share that Way to both Jew and gentile alike, but if one purports that there is more than one way of salvation, then they are preaching another gospel. I don't mean to sound harsh, but eternal souls are at stake, and either Yeshua is Who He said He was and He is the only Way to the Father, or we are all doomed and lost in our sins, iniquities and transgressions. He shed His blood for us; can we not take it on the chin for Him once in a while?

I submit this with the deepest respect in Messiah Yeshua, Christina Oakes

***Toby: I wholeheartedly agree with you. I am certainly not talking about comprimising on YEshua but rather having patience changing perceptions.

I think somebody smart once wrote to be "sly as serpents, but innocent as doves?"

Hi Christina,
I know exactly where you are coming from. You are right. If you want your Christian Org koshered you must agree to not proselytize. Not all ministries are evangelistic. G*d calls all of us into unique ministry for his purpose. I agree Yeshua is the only way. Yet, you can't shove Him down peoples throats. Sometimes you must put it into the hands of G*d and let His Spirit do the work.

I don't know what FFOZ's position is on this issue. I don't know if they are the ones who G*d would call to do this. But I would like to practice my faith as a Believer in Yeshua and Torah submissive without being viewed as one doing it to be deceptive.

The Jews have not seen a true representation of Yeshua in 1800 years. FFOZ is restoring the TRUE essence of Yeshua. J4J did not. In fact they have done even more damage through fake Torah and cont. the lies of the church concerning Yeshua. This has been viewed as a huge deception losing great credibility for Messianics.

Someone needs to be able to represent the TRUE Yeshua to the Jewish people. In order for this to be done it will have to be done on their terms within their comfort zone. It is about respecting their boundaries and understanding how deeply sensitive and complicated this issue is. I don't blame them at all for their positions on Jesus. The behavior and testimony of the church is all they have to go on and the church has failed miserably in representing the Jewish Messiah to the Jewish people. We must work to heal the damage and that is not compromise. It is what has to happen first.

Shavuah tov,
Kristee

At the moment I'm in Jerusalem and met with alot of Orthodox people. At first it was difficult not to share immediately the Gospel, since I'm taught this is the priority of every meeting with an unbeliever. Yet the Jews are different, especially considering what has already been shown to them by 'our' forefathers. I have seen that a genuine love and kindness to them will knock all barriers over. The moment they find out I believe, they expect me to come with all kinds of proselytizing arguments, yet if these dont come, they are surprised. The moment they find out I consider them the chosen people and am here to serve them, a good foundation is laid. This is uncommon for me since I always looked for a way to share the gospel (with my mouth). But believe me this works! When conversation are going on and they see the common grounds, as keeping kashrus, shabbos, and a genuine interest in Gemara etc this will bring about more than any flyer or Bible verse. (at least thats what I noticed the last weeks)
Well most of you probably know this already but I just wanted to share my experience.
Thanks for all the great articles and books, keep up the good work!

As St. Francis of Assisi once told his monks, "Preach the Gospel; if necessary, use words."

I've been able to be open about accepting Yeshua Hamashiach and still study Torah and the Hebrew Language with Reform and some Conservative Jewish friends. Our Jewish population is only in the hundreds. (I think.) I am not sneaky. I am respectful. And I don't constantly bring it up. BUT I have clearly contributed in the discussion. I was also able to attend the Jewish/Christian dialogues in our area last spring. This was a completely open forum where I participated, promoting the fact that Christianity was originally a branch of Judaism...although it has mutated into many different and unidentifiable paths. Those who love truth, seek it, and ultimately THEY FIND IT! I hope the Master can find a tool in me.

Let's keep on spreading the word...His "Kingdom will come, and His will Will be done on earth as it is in heaven." One of the first things He will do when He establishes His kingdom will be to separate the "sheep from the goats."
Zechariah points out (as you all know) that this will be decided when He acknowledges who is keeping Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles and who is not. True believers will keep the Feast...including many who have overlooked it throughout Christianity's era.

We will all be One as Jesus/Yeshua prayed in Gethsemane.
AND at that point, ALL Israel will be saved--them that have the testimony of the Annointed Messiah, and that are the seed of Abraham (Revelation).

WOW!
