“Draw near, O nations, to hear; and listen, O peoples! Let the earth and all it contains hear, and the world and all the springs from it. For the Lord’s indignation is against all the nations, and His wrath against all their armies; He has utterly destroyed them, He has given them over to slaughter.” (Isaiah 34:1-2)
Kingdoms come and kingdoms go. This world has seen many civilizations rise from obscurity to eminence. Though they seem invincible during their peak, they inevitably begin to crack and fall apart. Another kingdom follows and the cycle is repeated.
No area of land has seen more battles throughout human history than Eretz Yisrael, the Land of Israel. Ownership of this land has changed hands numerous times, whether from the many warring Canaanite tribal nations, to the Israelites, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, etc. One reason for this is the strategic land bridge that God formed to connect the continents of Africa, Asia, and Europe. The Land of Israel is a very convenient highway to transport goods, troops, and money.
Even in our own day, we frequently hear of the turmoil in the Land and in surrounding countries. We also hear in our media the efforts towards a so-called “peace” in the Middle-east. But with Palestinians vs. Israelis, Hamas vs. Fatah, Sunni vs. Shi’a, and the presence of American and European troops in the region, a lasting peace does not seem to be on the horizon. Kingdoms are still rising, and kingdoms are still falling.
“Now it will come about that in the last days the mountain of the LORD will be established as the chief of the mountains, and will be raised above the hills; and all the nations will stream to it. And many peoples will come and say, ‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in His paths.’ For the law will go forth from Zion and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. And He will judge between the nations, and will render decisions for many peoples; and they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, and never again will they learn war.” (Isaiah 2:2-4)
There is coming a time when a kingdom will rise above all others, never to fall. We are part of that kingdom now, though not in its fullest expression. Though we hear of endless bloodshed and violence, one day it will be like a distant memory. The resources once dedicated to destruction will be aimed at more peaceful means. Eretz Yisrael, the land that once had so many Gentile oppressors, will have Gentile companions coming to Jerusalem, not to conquer or destroy, but to worship in God’s presence and learn of his Torah (law).
