Self-Reflection

From time-to-time it is healthy to look into the mirror honestly and to carefully critique what we see. Internally, at FFOZ, I would say that we do this very often; I find that we are our biggest critics, in many ways.

One of the questions that I ask staff members is, "What would your opponents say about you?" I find it incredibly helpful (both personally and organizationally) to seriously consider other's perceptions--negative or constructive. The purpose of this exercise is to find areas in which we can improve and grow in order to better represent and communicate the message that we all feel called to share.

I will be making an announcement in a couple of weeks regarding the addition of several new staff members as well as some other big news regarding FFOZ. Currently, I am focusing on my effectiveness while on the road for the "Shalom Tour," and am spending much time transitioning the new staff members into their designated functions within FFOZ.

So, I have spent a lot of time in personal communications and am in the final stages of shaping their job descriptions and defining their areas of responsibilities. I will tell you, at this time, that all three positions will be directly involved in the area of improving our communications to you and to assist FFOZ in sharpening the message to reach more people with the message of Torah. We are very encouraged and excited about these appointments.

With this said, it is an excellent time for FFOZ to do some self-reflection. As we grow, I never want to lose touch with you all--you are equally a part of this message and a vital part of the support of this mission. It is important that we are transparent and accountable within the context of relationship to the supporters of this work.

I think I can easily answer the question "What makes you feel connected and valued in this work?" I think it has to be the commitment you all share in being personable. In emails, when you write your blogs, your articles, even as far as the Torah Club materials, you have a remarkable way of connecting with people in a personal level.

As I prepare Torah Club and read the commentary it is almost like Daniel is right there teaching me. That is a hard qualitiy to come by for scholars. Sometimes they like to use their $5 words. You keep your message right for the people. And as long as you kepp talking TO the people and not AT the people I think this ministry will continue to be sucessful in your call.

I would also be remiss if I did not mention your dedication. You all are so committed to your ministry I think that commitment shows in all that you do. And not only are you committed, but your families as well. Someone of us out here forget that everytime you guys travel to do another conference and what not that is more time away from your families. We thank you all (families included) for your committment.

What would make you better? Hmm that is a hard one to say. I think you all are doing a fantastic job. What would make you better would include more staff so that more can be done. AS I am sure you are well aware. I wonder how many times you all sit in staff meetings and say, "If we could only afford more staff." But, I think for the resources that G-d has given you you are all great stewards.
